ABOUT BRETT SCHAFER

Brett is a consumate Retail and Commercial Real Estate Professional with a commercial property career spanning 28 years. His background consists of broad exposure through various leadership roles in the shopping centre, office, hospitality and mixed-use property sectors, covering Development Planning, Strategy, Procurement & Implementation, Asset Optimization, Investment Management, Property Management, Leasing and Marketing. Brett has extensive North American as well as international experience, having worked for enterprises with assets and projects not only in the USA and Canada but also the Middle East, Asia, Europe and Africa.

Brett recently returned to North America after completing a contract establishing a real estate development and management group set up to plan, develop and own major mixed-use projects in Dubai and the MENA region. He led the delivery of over 10 million sq ft of mixed-use program during this assignment. Upon his return he established OptiProp Asset Management Ltd to focus on applying his skills and experience to assist, advise and facilitate investors and owners in optimizing their property assets, ranging from new masterplanned sites, shopping centers and new commercial real estate developments as well as renovation, repositioning and redevelopment of existing assets.

During Brett's MENA assignment he built up and led Al Futtaim Group Real Estate (AFGRE) development and property management business, having responsibility for a portfolio of strategic projects and assets across the Middle East and North Africa in excess of US$25 billion. The portfolio covers the key mixed-used masterplanned developments of Dubai Festival City and Cairo Festival City, which include major shopping centers, hotels, offices, residential and infrastructure, plus all the property assets across all the AF Group businesses.
